A Bulbous Trumpet was a self-directed university project exploring the connection between process and materials, focusing on ceramics and textiles.
The work featured bisque-fired, round-based ceramic forms stained with natural colours made from onion skins, avocado, hibiscus flowers, and safflower petals. These gentle, earthy stains altered the surfaces of the clay, reflecting the natural origins of the materials and the slow processes involved in making.
Each ceramic piece held soft woven textile “growths”, bringing together two very different materials. This contrast between hard clay and soft fabric challenged traditional ideas about which materials belong together, and how they can be used. A Bulbous Trumpet invites viewers to think differently about craft, material value, and the ways natural elements can be part of artistic practice.
